The marriage equality bill was signed into Washington State law by Governor Christine Gregoire on February 13th, 2012!
Not only did Washington state legalize same-sex marriage, but the state also struck down the law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. A first for any state. Washington RULES!
Unfortunately, gay marriage opponents in Washington state blocked this law from taking effect by submitting a petition for a ballot measure to repeal the statute. Only 120,577 signatures were needed and more than 241,000 signatures were collected.
BUT this past November, Washington State voters took a stance on the right side of history and approved R-74. HOORAY! Washington is now one of nine states in the United States to pass gay marriage laws on one of only three to uphold the law by popular vote. This is something we can all be proud of. *tear*
